Making art accessible to autistic people
Twice a year, the Musée d’Art Moderne du Luxembourg (MUDAM) offers special discovery days for families with autistic children. These events offer an opportunity to explore modern art in an environment that is adapted and attentive to sensory sensitivities.
During these discovery days, families can enjoy private 30-minute guided tours with experienced art mediators. This personalised approach allows autistic visitors to discover art at their own pace in a comfortable setting.
The initiative is aligned with best educational practice in :
- Offering structured and predictable experiences
- Offering individual attention through small groups
- Creating an inclusive cultural learning environment
- Making arts education accessible to diverse learners

MUDAM answers our questions
What do you look out for when you receive autistic visitors?
We pay particular attention to personalising each visit. Before families arrive, we take care to find out about each child’s specific interests and needs. The visit is then spontaneously and intuitively adapted to the child’s pace.
We are also attentive to preferred modes of communication – some children want to interact more, others prefer to observe silently. Our approach is always flexible and caring, in a relaxed atmosphere.

What are the most common requests/wishes?
There are not really many requests or wishes, as there is good communication before the visit.
Some visitors may have particular sensitivities to loud sounds and flashing lights, so we offer to adapt the tour accordingly.
We also offer various adaptable activities such as photography with Polaroids, tactile activities, and creative exercises based on the exhibitions.
Are there any plans to offer these days more often than twice a year?
At present, they are organised twice a year, usually in March/April and October/November.
In response to demand, there are no plans to organise these days more often.
How far in advance do I need to book, and how many places are available?
Reservations can be made up to the day before.
When will the days take place in 2025?
The first day will take place on Sunday, 23 March 2025. As our programme is designed on a quarterly basis, the date for October/November has not yet been set.
